This simple cleaning tip will keep your fridge cold — and lower your energy bills
You may not think much about the back of your fridge, but it could be costing you more money than you expect. The buildup of debris — especially pet hair — on a refrigerator’s vents and coils can reportedly add up to about $180 per year in energy costs. Here’s how:
Households without pets should clean behind the fridge at least twice a year, while homes with pets that shed regularly should tackle this chore every two or three months.
Musty smells or food that isn’t cold enough inside the refrigerator can be signs that the appliance’s coils need attention.
Open up the vent on the back of the fridge and vacuum hair and debris off the coils, using a small attachment to get into the nooks and crannies.
Taking the time for this task every few months can prevent your fridge from working harder than it needs to in order to keep food chilled, extending the lifespan of this major appliance and saving you money on power bills throughout the year.
