Letting Go

Former UU La Crosse Members Eric and Ellen Severson left La Crosse — their home of 21 years — about a year ago so that Eric could be called as a UU minister in Midland, MI. Eric will reflect on lessons learned about letting go, detachment, and saying goodbye.

Eric Severson has served Unitarian Universalism as a lay leader for a quarter century, at congregations in Mukwonago and La Crosse, and in the Prairie Star District and MidAmerica Region.

Eric and his wife, Ellen, were members of this fellowship from 1998 to 2019. Both of them also served as Office Administrator for about six years each.

Eric received a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural journalism in 1986. For a time, he edited fantasy fiction novels. He received his Master of Divinity degree from Meadville Lombard Theological School in 1998. Then life got in the way.

Two decades after his formal theological education, Eric re-embarked on the path of professional ministry. His self-understanding and life circumstances had changed, and he still felt called. He completed a parish internship at First Unitarian Society in Madison and a chaplain residency at Gundersen Medical Center. In May 2019 he was granted preliminary fellowship with the Unitarian Universalist Association and was called to serve full time at the UU Fellowship of Midland, MI, where he began one year ago.
