Description:Our March theme is Truth. “The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what’s true.” Carl Sagan Our fourth principle asks us to affirm A Free and Responsible Search for Truth and Meaning. In that spirit we bring you the documentary,
Race: The Power of an Illusion. This three part film shows what many assume to be scientific is actually shaped by our history, social institutions and cultural beliefs. Episode one examines the contemporary science that challenges our assumptions about human groups. Episode 2 examines the roots of the race concept, particularly 19th century science. Episode 3 shows that race is a biological myth, but racism gives different groups vastly different life chances. This is a longer film than we usually show, (each episode is one hour), and we invite you to come and stay for as long as you can.
Popcorn, great seats, and a congenial atmosphere. Saturday, March 2, 4 pm.
